For Those Starting Therapy for the First Time: What to Expect in the First Session
First-session anxiety is very common. Knowing how the process works can make taking this step easier.
Feeling anxious before starting therapy is entirely natural—questions such as “What should I talk about?”, “Will I be judged?”, and “Did I choose the right therapist?” cross most clients’ minds. The purpose of the first session is not an “exam,” but a mutual introduction.
The first meeting usually covers what brought you here, the difficulties you are experiencing, your expectations, and any past therapy experiences. During this process the therapist also shares their approach, their way of working, and the principles of confidentiality. You don’t have to tell everything in the first session; a trusting relationship is built over time.
The first few sessions are, in fact, an “assessment” period—you get a sense of whether working with your therapist is right for you, and the therapist comes to understand your needs better. During this process, don’t hesitate to ask the right questions and to share your expectations.
Remember: asking for help is not a weakness, but a strong step you take for yourself.
If you would like to explore these topics in your own process, we can work through them together.
